North-Facing rooms

What the condition actually does

A north-facing room never gets direct sun, only sky — a flat blue-grey light that turns brilliant whites grey and makes cool colours feel refrigerated. The counterintuitive fix is to stop chasing brightness and start choosing warmth: colours with red, ochre or brown in their base look lit from within under north light, while the gallery-white that worked in a south room curdles. Painters pay extra for this light; rooms can too.

The first move

Repaint with a warm base — even just swapping brilliant white for a plaster-toned white changes the room more than new furniture would. Test the sample on the wall facing the window, at 4pm, before committing.

Light under this condition

Run warm artificial light as a daytime layer, not an evening one: a lamp lit at noon in a north room is not an admission of defeat, it is the design working.

What fights it

• Brilliant white and blue-greys, which go morgue-cold by association
• The assumption that mirrors fix it — a mirror doubles the grey, not the sun
• Cool minimalism: under north light it reads as abandoned rather than serene
