How to Light a Bedroom
A working lighting plan for a bedroom — layers, heights and switches, not just a brighter bulb. One job at night, and every daytime job you let sneak in works against it.
BeforeAfter- 1
The plan
Three circuits: a warm general layer you can dim to candle-level, bedside lights operable without sitting up, and no cool-white anywhere. If one light must be bright for cleaning and packing, put it on its own switch you never touch after 8pm.

Why the single ceiling light keeps failing
One central source flattens a bedroom into an evenly lit box: no depth, no zones, and a shadow wherever you stand. Every working scheme for this room is plural — sources at more than one height, switched in more than one group, so the room can change register through the day.

Match the light to the room’s hours
A bedroom is hired for sleep, and its design quality is measurable in how fast the room winds you down. The bed gets the commanding position — headboard on a solid wall, door visible, window light not hitting the pillow — and everything added after that is audited against the one job: a chair that collects clothes is storage failing, a desk facing the bed is tomorrow staring at tonight, a screen is a decision about what the room is for. The lighting follows those hours: bright and even when the room is working, warm and low when it is winding down — and the switch layout is what lets one room do both.

The mistakes to skip
Overhead light as the only light — bedtime under an interrogation lamp. And in every room: bulbs of mixed colour temperature in one view, which reads as a fault even when nobody can say why.
Questions
- What matters most in a bedroom?

- Which numbers should I check before buying anything?
- Walk both sides of a shared bed: 60cm minimum per side, 75cm to open a drawer while standing there.
- Can I preview this on my own bedroom?
- Upload a photo in the Studio and run the ideas on the real room. New accounts start with 4 credits and a Standard render costs 4, so the first experiment is free.
