The job the room is hired for

A teenager’s room is a studio apartment with a curfew: sleeping, studying, hosting friends and broadcasting identity, all in one small plan, all governed by someone who is not you. The design succeeds by infrastructure, not decoration — a real desk out of the bed sightline, seating that is not the bed, power everywhere, blackout that respects weekend noon — with every visible surface left to its occupant. The parent designs the bones; the teen owns the skin. Rooms decorated FOR a teen get redecorated BY one.

Clearances that decide the layout

• The desk needs 100–120cm width and 60cm depth for a laptop-plus-elbows era, with window light from the side, never behind the screen.
• Desk chair push-back wants 65cm before it hits the bed.
• Guest seating: floor cushions or a beanbag stack within a 2m conversational radius of wherever the teen sits.
• One wall officially sacrificed to posters, prints and change — cork, rail or magnetic paint.

Lighting it

Desk task light, a warm ambient the teen chooses (LED strips count; this is not the hill), and blackout as good as the main bedroom’s. The overhead light will never be used; wire it anyway.

The mistakes this room attracts

• Design by parental nostalgia or Pinterest, installing a room the occupant tours politely and dismantles by half-term.
• The bed as the only seat, so every friend visit and study session happens on the duvet.
• No power plan: one socket, four devices, and an extension lead across the walkway.
• Treating the poster wall as a negotiation rather than a grant.

When it is small

Small teen rooms loft the bed and put the desk beneath — the one age where the cabin-bed instinct is correct — or run desk and storage down one wall and keep the social floor open. Ask which the occupant wants; the answer is the design.
